Entertainment
Entertainment law is a wide-ranging practice area that encompasses work in fields such as music, film, television and the theatre. Among these, The Bray Law Firm works primarily in the field of music, although our attorneys are among the few in the region that have handled film and television production transactions as well.
Among the firm’s first clients after being founded by William Bray in 2002 was MoRisen Records. MoRisen, a Charlotte-based record label, has grown to be generally recognized as the top rock and roll label in the area. Its artists, which include Alternative Champs, The Sammies and Elevator Action, have been featured on major film soundtracks and in numerous television shows, such as The O.C. and Wildfire. The Bray Law Firm has assisted MoRisen with the acquisition of national distribution deals, as well as a co-publishing agreement with Lionsgate Music Publishing (formerly Baby New Year Publishing).
Our attorneys have negotiated contracts involving such internationally-known artists as Alicia Keys, Wyclef Jean and Rita Marley. As an added consideration to any client considering the retention of a law firm, our work in the field has allowed us to develop contacts throughout the world of entertainment which reach far beyond the Charlotte region.
In addition to MoRisen Records, The Bray Law Firm has worked with and continues to work with numerous start-up record labels and production companies. The recording artists we represent include the Chairmen of the Board (“Carolina Girls”), The Mile After, and Swampdawamp.
Our efforts as one of the few firms in the area with an entertainment law emphasis have been recognized within our industry, as evidenced by the election of William Bray to serve as the Chair of the Sports and Entertainment Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association for 2006-2007. Our attorneys furthermore strive to remain updated on the industry through attending national seminars and conferences throughout the United States.
The unique combination of a motorsports practice and an entertainment practice has begun to gain the firm a reputation as a facilitator between the worlds of racing and entertainment, which are becoming more entwined as NASCAR develops a cross-cultural appeal. Our attorneys are routinely consulted on ventures that bridge the gap between these two industries, and maintain the necessary contacts to assist their clients in this respect.
Although not intended as a comprehensive list, our entertainment law practice includes work in the following areas:
| Recording Contracts | Record Label Organization | Music Publishing |
| Copyright | Trademark | Film Production |
| Television Production | Dispute Resolution |
Litigation |
Entertainment clients in fields other than music include WHHI-TV and Mad Toy Box Films.
If you are considering the retention of an entertainment law firm, ensure that your choice has the requisite experience required to guide you through this uniquely specialized practice area. If you have come this far, take the extra step and contact The Bray Law Firm to schedule a consultation.
